Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has traveled to Saudi Arabia to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday.
This visit precedes significant discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials aimed at finding a resolution to the ongoing war with Russia, a conflict that has reached an increasingly precarious stage for Kyiv.
The United States, previously Ukraine’s main ally, has recently shifted its approach by engaging directly with Moscow while halting military assistance and intelligence sharing with Kyiv. This change comes as President Donald Trump seeks a swift end to the conflict, despite concerns from Ukrainian leadership regarding the lack of U.S. security guarantees deemed vital for any peace agreement.
Saudi Arabia has played various mediating roles since Russia’s 2022 invasion, including facilitating prisoner exchanges and hosting talks between Russia and the United States last month. Zelenskyy’s meeting with the crown prince underscores Riyadh’s ongoing involvement in diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
Tuesday’s talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials mark the first official meeting since a contentious Oval Office encounter between Zelenskyy and President Trump. The discussions are expected to focus on a bilateral minerals deal and strategies to end the war. Under significant pressure from Trump, who advocates for a rapid conclusion to the conflict, Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of aligning with U.S. objectives, despite not securing explicit security assurances.
Zelenskyy has announced that he will not personally attend Tuesday’s talks; instead, the Ukrainian delegation will include his chief of staff, foreign and defense ministers, and a senior military official from the presidential administration. Expressing commitment to constructive dialogue, Zelenskyy stated, “On our side, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue, and we hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps.”
