Zelensky Confirms Monday Meeting With Trump in Washington
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he will travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday for direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The agenda: finding ways to “end the killing and the war” in Ukraine.
The announcement came on Saturday after a phone call between the two leaders. Trump reportedly briefed Zelensky on the “main points” of his discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit in Alaska.
“I am grateful for the invitation,” Zelensky said, describing the exchange with Trump as a “long and substantive conversation” that was later joined by European leaders.
Trump-Putin Alaska Talks End Without Ceasefire
The Washington visit comes just three days after Trump’s high-profile meeting with Putin in Alaska. That summit ended without any breakthrough or ceasefire announcement, leaving the war — now in its fourth year — without a clear path to resolution.
Zelensky, responding to the lack of progress, stressed the importance of European participation. He said Kyiv’s allies on the continent must be involved “at every stage” of any negotiation process.
Ukraine Pushes for Trilateral Talks
Zelensky reiterated Kyiv’s push for a trilateral summit involving himself, Trump, and Putin, a format Ukraine believes could deliver results.
“Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelensky said.
However, the Kremlin has so far resisted the proposal.
