Wizkid responds as Seun Kuti criticism escalates online
Nigerian music superstar Wizkid has fired back at Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti after days of public criticism, turning an ongoing debate about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy into a heated online confrontation.
The exchange, which unfolded across Instagram and X, has dominated entertainment conversations and triggered widespread reactions from fans and industry observers.
Seun Kuti warns against Fela comparisons
The dispute began after Seun Kuti repeatedly cautioned Wizkid FC fans against comparing the Grammy-winning Afrobeats star to his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a series of livestreams and posts, Seun argued that Fela’s legacy was rooted in political activism, cultural resistance, and genre-defining innovation, not just musical success. He maintained that drawing inspiration from Afrobeat or sampling its elements does not amount to being “the new Fela.”
Seun also rejected claims that he was clout-chasing, stating that his career did not depend on online controversy and citing his extensive international touring, including 82 shows in 2025.
Wizkid’s posts trigger backlash and support
On Tuesday, January 20, Wizkid responded with a string of blunt posts on Instagram Stories and X, some of which were later deleted.
Tagging Seun’s handle, @bigbirdkuti, Wizkid wrote: “@bigbirdkuti hungry boy! U too small! Na ur papa we dey talk to. @bigbirdkuti hungry bird!”
In another post, he added: “Ok everybody better pass Wizkid! Can we all sleep now? Fela fight for freedom this fool Dey fight fc! Oloshi Omo ale!”
Other posts included claims of being “bigger than your papa” and “I’m Big Wiz everyday bigger than your papa!! Wetin u one do fool?” written in a mix of Pidgin English and Yoruba-inflected insults.
The remarks contrasted Fela’s historical struggle for societal freedom with what Wizkid portrayed as Seun’s focus on online fan battles, with “fc” referring to Wizkid’s fanbase.
Mixed reactions trail online exchange
Screenshots of Wizkid’s posts quickly spread across social media, sparking memes, arguments, and divided opinions.
While some fans applauded Wizkid’s response as a long-overdue clapback, others criticised him for dragging Fela’s family and legacy into a personal dispute.
Seun Kuti replies with restrained message
Seun Kuti responded shortly afterwards on Instagram, adopting a calmer tone as he told Wizkid: “Wahala Jam network!!! Just be yourself short man. You are also great.”
