The Federal Government has announced a comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), citing urgent needs to improve the scheme’s relevance, security, and economic contribution.
This decision was revealed on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, during the inauguration of a presidential committee tasked with reforming the NYSC structure. The Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim, stated that the overhaul will focus on modernizing the 50-year-old scheme to meet the current realities facing Nigerian youth and the nation at large.
Key Areas of Reform
- Improved Security for Corps Members
The government highlighted the increasing safety threats faced by corps members, especially in conflict-prone areas. Dr. Ibrahim stressed that the lives of young Nigerians must be protected as they serve the country. Measures are being considered to either limit postings to safer regions or upgrade security infrastructure in volatile areas. - Specialized Corps for National Needs
One of the bold reforms includes the introduction of specialized corps – such as a Teachers’ Corps and a Medical Corps – to directly address critical gaps in education and healthcare across underserved communities in Nigeria. - NYSC as a Revenue-Generating Agency
The Federal Government also revealed plans to reposition NYSC as a self-sustaining agency. This includes equipping corps members with entrepreneurial skills, promoting start-ups, and tapping into public-private partnerships to reduce financial dependence on the government. - Policy and Legal Framework Review
The overhaul committee will review existing NYSC laws and recommend updates to the legal and operational structure of the scheme. This includes stakeholder engagement across Nigeria and the drafting of a new policy blueprint expected later in the year.
“The NYSC has remained a vital symbol of unity, but it must now evolve to truly empower our youth and support national development in practical terms,” Dr. Ibrahim said.
The reform committee has been given a defined timeline to submit actionable recommendations that will guide the scheme’s transformation.
