LAGOS — Millions of WhatsApp users in Nigeria and across the globe may soon lose access to the messaging platform, as Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced it will discontinue support for certain older smartphones starting May 5, 2025.
The move, according to Meta, is part of its broader commitment to user safety, data privacy, and platform optimization in line with newer technology standards.
Why This Matters
WhatsApp has grown to become an essential communication tool for individuals, families, and small businesses. The platform’s decision to end support for older devices will significantly impact users who have not upgraded to newer models.
In a statement, Meta explained:
“As technology evolves, we must phase out support for older hardware and operating systems to maintain app security, performance, and stability.”
Affected iPhone Models
iPhones that will no longer support WhatsApp include those running on iOS versions lower than 15.1. The following models are affected:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
These devices are unable to upgrade beyond iOS 12.5.7, making them incompatible with future WhatsApp updates.
Affected Android Models
This update follows an earlier decision by WhatsApp to stop supporting Android 4.4 (KitKat) devices as of January 1, 2025. The Android smartphones affected include:
Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD
HTC: One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
LG: Optimus G, L90
Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Google Nexus 4
Users of these devices will no longer be able to access WhatsApp features, send or receive messages, or restore backups.
What Users Should Do
Meta urges users to upgrade their devices to smartphones running iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and above. Additionally, all users are advised to back up their chat histories before switching devices to prevent the loss of important conversations and media files.
To back up chats, go to:
Android: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
iPhone: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
The WhatsApp Help Center also provides detailed guides for backup and device migration.
Final Note
While the update aims to enhance app functionality and user protection, it could also pose challenges for users who rely on older phones due to economic limitations. However, Meta maintains that continued progress requires software and hardware alignment.
