Appearing live on Arise News this morning, Labour Party leader Peter Obi delivered a sweeping critique of the current state of governance in Nigeria. Speaking candidly, Obi argued that the real issue is not the removal of fuel subsidy, but the government’s failure to plan and implement it properly.
“There’s nothing wrong with removing fuel subsidy. The problem is in how it was done without planning, without cushioning measures for the masses,” he said.

Obi emphasized that holding elections is not enough true democracy means delivering good governance, security, education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. According to him, Nigerians are not feeling the impact of governance because leaders are focused on propaganda, not performance.
“A country is not measured by what it says, but what it does. We’re not seeing governance, we’re seeing press statements,” he noted.
Economic Mismanagement and Misplaced Priorities
Officials Lack Economic Understanding
Peter Obi accused government officials of making uninformed economic decisions and failing to invest in productive sectors like manufacturing, education, and infrastructure.
“You can’t run a productive economy with this kind of leadership. They don’t understand the basics of development,” he said.
He warned that poverty and insecurity will only worsen unless the federal government shifts focus from empty rhetoric to real action.
Fuel Subsidy Removal: A Case of Wrong Timing
No Cushioning Measures for Citizens
Obi agreed that fuel subsidy removal was inevitable, but said it should have been strategically planned. He argued that the government should have revived local refineries, improved public transport, and created social safety nets before implementing the removal.
“No country removes subsidies in a vacuum. You must build capacity first,” he stressed.
Tinubu’s Controversial Policy Shifts
Since taking office in 2023, President Bola Tinubu has pursued aggressive economic reforms, starting with fuel subsidy removal and floating the naira. While some experts hail these as necessary steps, millions of Nigerians have experienced worsened living conditions due to rising fuel prices, inflation, and weak infrastructure.
