Ibom Air Passenger Slaps Air Hostess, Clashes with Lagos Airport Officials

A routine Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos descended into chaos after a female passenger allegedly slapped a cabin crew member mid-air and later clashed violently with airport officials at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Mid-Air Altercation Over Safety Instructions

According to eyewitnesses and airline reports, the trouble began when the passenger refused to comply with routine safety directives specifically switching off her phone during takeoff or landing. The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, culminating in the passenger allegedly slapping the air hostess.

Violent Scene on Arrival in Lagos

Upon landing, tensions boiled over. The passenger confronted both Ibom Air staff and airport security personnel, allegedly tearing off the purser’s wig and glasses, stepping on her, and attempting to remove a fire extinguisher from its holder.

Despite repeated attempts to calm her down, the situation turned physical, prompting intervention from law enforcement officers who forcefully removed her from the aircraft.

NCAA Condemns Assault on Crew

Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), condemned the attack and stressed that passengers must respect the authority of the cabin crew.

“Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights,” he said, warning that such behavior would be met with severe consequences.

Passenger Placed on No-Fly List by Ibom Air

Following the incident, Ibom Air issued a travel restriction on the passenger identified in some reports as Ms. Emmanson, banning her from future flights with the airline. A formal report has also been filed with the NCAA for possible legal action.

Legal Implications for In-Flight Assaults

Under Nigerian aviation law, physically assaulting crew members can attract stiff penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or being placed on an industry-wide no-fly list. The incident has reignited conversations about airline safety and passenger conduct.
