Former Anambra State governorship candidate and close associate of Peter Obi, Valentine Ozigbo, has expressed doubts about the future of the Labour Party (LP), stating that he does not see the party as a viable political force.
Ozigbo, who was a key member of the Obidient Movement, also suggested that Obi would not contest future elections under the LP platform.
Ozigbo’s Political Journey and Exit from LP
A former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ozigbo resigned from the party in 2022 to support Obi’s presidential bid under LP. However, on February 19, 2025, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his commitment to a greater vision for Anambra State.
In his resignation letter, he noted that he had informed Obi of his decision as a mark of respect for his leadership.
LP’s Future in Doubt
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Ozigbo dismissed the prospects of the Labour Party, saying:
“I don’t see a future for the Labour Party. I’m happy to live with that assertion, and I would like to be proven wrong.”
He also suggested that Peter Obi might leave the party if he decides to run for office again:
“Peter Obi left ANPP for APGA, then PDP, and later Labour Party. If he wishes to run for election, I can almost guarantee it won’t be under Labour Party.
I am not his spokesperson, and I could be wrong, but I have witnessed several discussions around coalitions, and I remain optimistic about that.”
Ozigbo’s comments have sparked reactions, particularly within the Obidient Movement, as speculation grows about Obi’s next political move.
