Policy Takes Effect Immediately, Says US Embassy
The United States Department of State has announced a major change in its visa issuance policy for Nigerian citizens. Effective immediately, most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerians will now be single-entry visas valid for just three months.
This development was disclosed in a press release issued by the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the statement read.
Previous Visas Remain Valid
The embassy clarified that the new restrictions will not apply retroactively. Nigerian travelers who already hold valid US visas issued before July 8, 2025, can continue using them based on their existing terms.
“Those US non-immigrant visas issued before July 8, 2025, will retain their status and validity,” the statement noted.
Part of a Global Visa Reciprocity Policy
Why the Policy Changed
According to the US Department of State, the update aligns with its global visa reciprocity process — a framework that evaluates visa policies with foreign governments based on mutual treatment, national security, and technical standards.
“This is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time,” the embassy stated. “Such changes may involve increasing or decreasing permitted entries and duration of validity.”
The embassy explained that the move was also intended to protect the integrity of the US immigration system and align with global technical and security benchmarks.
Benchmarks Driving the Policy
The US highlighted key criteria for assessing visa agreements with countries like Nigeria, including:
Secure travel documents: Countries must issue passports and travel documents with biometric verification and security features.
Visa overstay management: Countries are expected to actively monitor and reduce overstays by their citizens.
Information sharing: Nations must collaborate on sharing security, identity, and criminal background information.
“The US Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the embassy confirmed.
Ongoing Diplomatic Relations Remain Strong
Despite the restrictions, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a strong bilateral relationship with Nigeria.
“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity,” the statement added.
The US also commended Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its immigration and security systems, describing them as moves toward international best practices.
Advice to Nigerian Travellers
The US Embassy urged Nigerian visa holders and applicants to comply fully with the new guidelines and uphold the terms of their travel authorizations.
“Nigerian travellers are encouraged to respect and adhere to the terms of their visas, and ensure travel documents are authentic, accurate, and up to date,” the statement said.
The embassy reiterated its support for people-to-people engagement between the two nations through education, business, and cultural exchange.
“We remain a committed partner in deepening ties with Nigeria,” it concluded.
