UNIZIK Student Dies in Tragic Fall from Lodge Balcony
A tragic incident has claimed the life of a male student from Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State. The student, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, reportedly jumped from the third floor of a private lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction in Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area.
Incident Linked to Suspected Drug Use
Eyewitnesses told thewatch.ng that the student had allegedly consumed an unknown substance believed to be mkpurummiri (crystal meth) before the fall.
“We suddenly heard a loud thud, and when we rushed out, we found the young man lying in a pool of blood,” a source said.
Despite immediate efforts to revive him, the student was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital where he was rushed for emergency treatment.
Roommate Found in Unstable Condition
Following the incident, concerned residents searched the victim’s room and discovered his roommate in a severely incoherent state. He is also suspected to have ingested the same substance.
The roommate has since been taken into custody and is expected to be questioned after medical evaluation and stabilization.
UNIZIK Authorities Respond to Tragedy
The Chief Safety Officer of UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed that the school is aware of the incident and has launched an internal investigation.
“We are still investigating to be sure of what happened, how it happened, and the proper identity of the victim,” Chukwurah told thewatch.ng.
“It happened in a private lodge outside the school, and we don’t have control over who is admitted to such lodges.”
The university stressed that while the lodge is off-campus and not under UNIZIK’s jurisdiction, the administration is collaborating with relevant security agencies to establish the full facts.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Reaction
The news has triggered fresh concerns about the growing abuse of mkpurummiri among young people in Nigeria, especially within university communities. The Anambra State Police and university security units are expected to issue formal updates as investigations progress.
