Oleksandr Merezhko, a Ukrainian lawmaker from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s party, has strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine, calling it a move that will be remembered in “historical infamy.”
Trump’s decision, announced on Monday, follows a recent confrontation with Zelenskyy last Friday. The move has further disrupted U.S. policy on Ukraine and Russia since Trump took office in January.
Reacting to the development, Merezhko expressed shock and disappointment.
“It’s unbelievable what is unfolding because I couldn’t imagine in my worst dreams that Trump would be cutting off military aid to Ukraine when we need it so much,” he told BBC’s Newsday.
He urged Trump to consider the long-term impact of his actions, stating, “I think Mr. Trump should seriously think about how he’s going to be remembered in history. To me, it’s a date that will go down in historical infamy.”
While the White House has yet to comment on the specifics, including the extent of the aid affected or the duration of the pause, the decision has already sparked significant international concern.
