The tone has shifted dramatically. From tense exchanges in the Oval Office to what now seems like a “perfect phone call,” the dynamics between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have taken a new turn.
President Trump is highly transactional, his priority is striking deals rather than following ideological alignments. He has no deep-rooted loyalty to Ukraine or Russia; his primary goal is securing an agreement that benefits America.
Peace in Ukraine would not only stop the bloodshed but also open doors for economic opportunities. Trump wants to recoup taxpayer money spent on Ukraine and reestablish economic ties with Russia. But above all, he wants to cement his legacy as the “peacemaker president.”
Recognizing this, Zelenskyy appears to have adjusted his approach. Sources suggest Ukraine is actively engaging in economic cooperation with the U.S., expanding initial deals, particularly in minerals and industry. A stronger American economic presence in Ukraine could serve as a crucial security guarantee.
However, Zelenskyy remains wary of Russia. His past interactions with Trump have reinforced concerns that the U.S. president is inclined to trust Vladimir Putin. One insider put it bluntly: “Trump has a high tolerance for empty promises.”
Zelenskyy’s challenge now is to leverage transactional diplomacy to ensure Ukraine’s interests are protected. As Trump pushes for a swift deal, the risk of Russia offering disingenuous commitments grows. The stakes for Ukraine have never been higher.
