Trump Eyes Qatari Jet as Air Force One Replacement
A Lavish Gift Amid Frustration with Boeing. Former US President Donald Trump is reportedly eyeing a luxury Boeing 747-8 jet, offered by the Qatari royal family, as a potential replacement for the current Air Force One. This comes amid growing frustration over delays and cost overruns in Boeing’s project to deliver new presidential aircraft.
Boeing’s VC-25B replacements originally slated for earlier delivery are now expected in 2027 and 2028. Trump, known for his outspoken criticism of inflated defense costs, is said to be dissatisfied with Boeing’s timeline and pricing.
Inside the $100 Million Jet
The Qatari aircraft, once part of the Qatar Amiri Flight fleet, features a bespoke interior complete with leather-lined cabins and gold-accented ceilings. Built in 2012, the aircraft is valued between $75 million and $100 million, excluding an estimated $25 million for its luxury upgrades.
Trump reportedly toured the jet in February at West Palm Beach airport. Shortly after, he publicly criticized Boeing, further fuelling speculation about a switch to the Qatari offer.
Political and Ethical Concerns
If accepted, the gift would raise serious questions about the ethical and diplomatic implications of a former or future president receiving such an extravagant offering from a foreign government.
While no formal decision has been made, the White House is expected to reassess the Air Force One deal by June. Should Boeing continue to delay, the Qatari option may gain more serious consideration.
This development echoes a 2018 episode in which Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted a similar luxury Boeing 747-8 from Qatar.
