U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced an immediate ban on student visas for foreign nationals set to begin studies at Harvard University, intensifying his administration’s confrontation with the American higher education system.
The proclamation explicitly restricts entry into the United States for international students who have been accepted into Harvard’s academic and exchange programs for the upcoming academic term.
“It is necessary to restrict the entry of foreign nationals who seek to enter the United States solely or principally to participate in a course of study at Harvard University,” Trump said in a late-night statement.

According to Trump’s executive order, international students already enrolled at Harvard may face additional scrutiny, including visa revocation, under an ongoing review process.
The order cites national security concerns, accusing the Ivy League institution of failing to cooperate with federal requests for information regarding criminal or unethical conduct involving foreign students.
“It presents an unacceptable risk to our Nation’s security for an academic institution to refuse to provide sufficient information about known instances of misconduct,” Trump argued.
Additionally, the president accused Harvard of “discrimination against non-preferred races, national origins, and religions,” suggesting that the presence of foreign students reduces opportunities for American citizens.
