A deaf pedestrian tragically lost his life on Sunday while waiting for a commercial bus at a designated stop along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, inward Maryland, near Temac Filling Station in Ikeja, Lagos.
The fatal accident involved two Suzuki mini commercial buses (Korope) with registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG. According to preliminary reports, one of the buses—allegedly speeding—lost control, crashed into a stationary bus, and fatally struck the unsuspecting pedestrian.
Swift Emergency Response
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation, secure the area, and coordinate with law enforcement. Officers from the Area F Police Division took custody of both vehicles for further investigation, while personnel from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the victim’s remains to the General Hospital, Ikeja.
Government Reacts
Reacting to the incident, Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, extended condolences to the victim’s family and warned commercial transport operators about the dangers of reckless speeding and traffic violations.
He stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, especially brake system checks, to prevent further tragedies. He also highlighted the role of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) speed monitoring sites at Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way in tracking speed violations and improving road safety.
“Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and disregard for traffic laws pose a serious threat to public safety,” Giwa stated. “I urge all motorists to operate within legal speed limits to prevent avoidable tragedies.”
