New Federal Institutions for the South-East: Tinubu Signs Key Bills
President Bola Tinubu has signed into law the bills establishing three federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone, a move Senate President Godswill Akpabio described as “inclusive leadership” and a “milestone for the region.”
The newly approved institutions are:
Federal University, Okigwe, Imo State
Federal College of Education, Bende, Abia State
Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Bende, Abia State
Akpabio Praises Lawmakers and Tinubu’s Commitment
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio praised the collaborative efforts of lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly who backed the bills.
He specifically commended:
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who sponsored two of the bills
Deputy Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi
Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu
Senator Patrick Ndubueze, the main sponsor of the third bill
Akpabio acknowledged their “effective representation” and commitment to improving the educational and healthcare outcomes for the South-East.
Bridging Historical Gaps and Advancing Regional Development
The Senate President emphasized that the creation of these institutions would not only improve access to quality education and healthcare in the region but also help address long-standing feelings of marginalization.
“The establishment of these institutions will go a long way to remove the nagging feelings of distrust and socio-economic marginalization among the people of the South-East,” he stated.
Akpabio lauded Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for its inclusive tone and urged the people of the region to embrace the administration’s developmental vision.
“I commend the President for his open-heartedness and unrestrained affection for the region… I call on the great Ndigbo people to continue to key into the Renewed Hope Agenda and position for strategic and progressive alliance with President Bola Tinubu,” he said.
He also assured that continued support for the administration would yield more democratic dividends for the region.
