In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suspension of foreign aid to African countries, President Bola Tinubu has stated that he welcomes global developments, emphasizing the need for African nations to become self-sufficient.
Earlier, TheWatch reported that Trump signed an executive order halting the operations of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for 90 days in several African nations, including Nigeria. USAID had previously focused on economic growth, food security, governance, healthcare, gender equality, conflict resolution, and renewable energy in Nigeria, making the country the sixth-largest beneficiary of the agency’s assistance.
The suspension has raised concerns across Nigeria, given the potential impact on various sectors.
Speaking on Tuesday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national caucus meeting at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu described the situation as a lesson for Nigeria and the African continent.
“I like what is happening around the world,” Tinubu said. “If anything, it is teaching us that we, particularly Nigerians and the great African continent, can build ourselves and help Africa grow.”
His remarks suggest a push for increased self-reliance among African nations in response to shifting global dynamics.
