Three Years After Rico Swavey’s Passing

Three years after the tragic death of Big Brother Naija star and singer Patrick Fakoya, popularly known as Rico Swavey, his management and fans have taken to social media to honour his memory with emotional tributes.

On Monday, a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by his management described Rico as “a beacon of love and creativity”, adding that his memory “blooms like a garden of everlasting flowers.”

“On this 3rd anniversary, we remember not just your departure, but the life you lived and the love you gave. Keep resting, Rico,” the post read.

The Accident That Claimed His Life

Rico Swavey, who rose to fame during the 2018 BBNaija ‘Double Wahala’ edition, tragically died on October 13, 2022, after sustaining severe injuries in a car accident along the Lekki-Ajah Expressway in Lagos.

The crash reportedly occurred on a poorly lit section of the road, sparking nationwide grief and renewed concerns about road safety in Lagos.

At the time, an eyewitness Sunday Michael, the Uber driver who was with Rico during his final moments clarified that the reality star was not intoxicated before the crash, debunking rumours that circulated online.

Mother’s Heartbreaking Account

In a tearful interview with journalist Chude Jideonwo, Rico’s mother recounted watching her son die in her arms at a hospital in Lekki. She described the moment as one she would never forget, saying she repeatedly pleaded for him to “come back to her.”

Her emotional revelation reignited public conversations about grief, maternal pain, and the human side of celebrity losses.

Hospital’s Response to Negligence Allegations

Following Rico’s death, Doren Specialist Hospital, where he was initially treated, came under public scrutiny after a viral video showed the late star on a hospital bed.

The hospital, however, denied all allegations of negligence and dismissed claims that its staff filmed him, insisting that all medical procedures were handled according to standard practice.

Big Brother Naija’s Tribute to Fallen Stars

Earlier in 2025, Big Brother Naija Season 10 paid tribute to three former housemates who passed away — Francisca Owumi, Joseph Ada, and Rico Swavey.

During the live finale, the show held a minute of silence and aired a touching montage celebrating their lives and contributions to the BBNaija legacy.
