Former Manchester United forward Teddy Sheringham has advocated for the club to appoint ex-captain Roy Keane as manager, should they choose to replace current head coach Ruben Amorim.
Since his appointment in November, Amorim’s tenure has been underwhelming, with the team languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.
In an interview with Prime Casino, Sheringham emphasized Keane’s potential to instill strong leadership at Old Trafford, a quality he believes is currently lacking.
He stated, “Roy’s been out of work for a little while now. I wouldn’t be averse to having him back at the football club. But there is only one role for Roy Keane and he needs to be the leader. If they’re thinking about changing Amorim, it would be a leadership coup to get Roy in.”
Keane, 53, has been working as a television pundit since leaving his assistant manager role at Nottingham Forest in 2019. His managerial experience includes stints at Sunderland and Ipswich Town, as well as assistant roles with the Republic of Ireland national team and Aston Villa.
During his playing career at Manchester United, Keane was instrumental in the club’s success, securing seven Premier League titles and playing a pivotal role in the treble-winning 1998-99 season.
Sheringham’s endorsement of Keane comes amid growing scrutiny of Amorim’s performance, with the team struggling to find form and consistency. The potential managerial change reflects the club’s desire to reestablish its competitive edge and return to its former prominence in English football.
