Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara Visits President Tinubu Amid Efforts for Peace

Siminalayi Fubara Meets President Tinubu in Lagos

Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara visited President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Tuesday. This meeting comes less than a week after Fubara publicly declared his intention to put aside personal pride to help restore peace in Rivers State.

Meeting Details Remain Confidential

The specifics of the discussion between President Tinubu and Fubara have not been disclosed. However, the visit signals ongoing efforts to resolve the political unrest that has plagued Rivers State.

Fubara’s Peace Efforts Include Reconciliation with Nyesom Wike

Prior to the visit, Fubara revealed his efforts to reconcile with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Fubara referred to Wike as his “boss” and emphasized the need to prioritize the state’s interests above personal differences.

“We have to come down from our high horses and subject ourselves to the peace process. And that is what we are doing,” Fubara stated.
“What is important is for the state to move forward. It is not about you the state’s interest is paramount.”

Background: Rivers State Political Crisis and Government Intervention

The political crisis in Rivers State began shortly after Fubara assumed office as governor. A power struggle between Fubara and Wike deepened divisions, especially within the Rivers State House of Assembly, resulting in attempts to impeach Fubara.

Presidential State of Emergency and Suspension

On 18th March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State to curb the escalating crisis. He suspended Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

During this period, retired naval chief Ibok-Ette Ibas was appointed sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs and restore stability.

What This Means for Rivers State

The political impasse has significantly affected governance in Rivers State. The meeting between Fubara and President Tinubu signals a possible step toward dialogue and peacebuilding, essential for the state’s progress.
