Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has condemned the reported killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader, Muammar Gaddafi.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Sani described the development as tragic and unfortunate, while questioning the safety of Saif al-Islam’s decision to return to Libya.
Saif al-Islam was reportedly assassinated in the western Libyan city of Zintan, where he had been based for more than a decade, although no official confirmation has been issued by Libyan authorities.
Reacting to the reports, Sani said he had earlier expressed concern over Saif al-Islam’s safety upon learning of his plans to return to Libya.
“When I read some time ago that Gaddafi’s son was returning to Libya, I wondered how safe that decision was,” he said.
“The assassination of Saif al-Islam is tragic and unfortunate. Even the testimony of victims of human trafficking trapped in Libya tells everything about the tragedy and violence in that country. Adieu Saif.”
Saif al-Islam has remained a controversial figure in Libya since the 2011 uprising that led to the death of his father, with years of political instability, armed conflict, and human rights abuses continuing to plague the country.
