Nigerian industrialist and businesswoman Shade Okoya has shared new insights into her 26-year marriage to billionaire businessman Razak Okoya. In a recent interview with BBC Yoruba, Shade addressed public conversations around their 38-year age gap and spoke candidly about her family’s support and her role as a wife.
Shade got married to Razak Okoya in 1999 when she was just 21 years old, while her husband was 59. Despite the age difference, she said she has never felt like she missed out by not marrying someone closer to her age.
“I am happy in my marriage. He is far older than me but I don’t think I miss out on anything because I didn’t marry a young man,” she said.
Speaking on how her family reacted, she noted that her father had passed away before the marriage, but her mother and grandmother were fully supportive of her decision.
She also recalled how quickly their relationship progressed, saying: “We met each other, and he liked me and didn’t waste time at all.”
Shade described her husband as generous and protective, noting that he always defends her and made it clear early on that she would have to work and not just be a housewife. Despite having domestic staff, she said she continues to care for him personally.
“My husband has been very generous with me. God said this is where I will be,” she added.
Reflecting on their journey together, Shade emphasized the importance of love, respect, and support in marriage, noting that her home has remained peaceful and happy over the years.
