Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Lawyers Decry Selective Justice Over Criminal Charges

Senator Natasha Akpoti

Legal Team Raises Alarm Over Unaddressed Petitions

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal representatives have publicly criticized what they describe as a troubling case of selective justice, following the Federal Government’s decision to press criminal charges against the senator.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, the legal team outlined that 12 formal petitions had been submitted by Akpoti-Uduaghan between March and May 2025. These petitions detailed serious allegations, including cyberstalking, defamation, threats to life, and an assassination attempt.

Police Yet to Act on Serious Allegations

Despite the gravity of these claims, no action has reportedly been taken by the Nigeria Police Force or other relevant security agencies. The legal team emphasized that many of the accused individuals named in the petitions are high-ranking public officials, including:

Senate President Godswill Akpabio

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello

One petition allegedly involved the abduction and attempted assassination of a protocol officer working with the senator.

Counter-Allegations Fast-Tracked While Original Petitions Ignored

The legal team expressed deep concern that counter-allegations filed by the same individuals Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan accused have been swiftly acted upon, leading to criminal charges against her.

“This glaring disparity raises serious concerns about a biased and uneven application of justice,” the statement read.

Senator Pledges Cooperation Amid Legal Challenge

Though currently abroad on personal engagements, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has acknowledged receiving official notification regarding the charges filed against her. Her legal team confirmed she intends to appear in court as soon as a date is set.

“She remains resolute in her commitment to due process,” said the legal team.

They also extended appreciation to members of the public who have expressed concern over what they described as “an extraordinarily questionable criminal charge.”

Call for Impartial Investigation and Equal Justice

The legal team concluded their statement by renewing calls for impartial investigations into all outstanding petitions. They urged law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies to demonstrate fairness, accountability, and the equal application of justice, regardless of political status or affiliation.

“There is a legitimate public expectation that law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies uphold the principles of fairness, due process, and equal justice regardless of who is involved,” they reiterated.
