Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused the Nigerian Senate of applying double standards in disciplinary actions, questioning why male senators involved in violent altercations have never been sanctioned, while she was suspended for six months.
The controversy erupted after Natasha submitted a petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. She claims that her refusal to yield to his alleged advances led to persistent harassment and political retaliation, culminating in her suspension.
“I experienced sexual harassment in the hands of the Senate President. Because I refused to yield to his demands, my rights and privileges as a senator were systematically deprived,” she stated in an interview with Sky News’ Anna Botting.
Natasha also challenged the Senate to specify the misconduct that led to her suspension, asserting that the action was politically motivated.
“I was suspended because of that petition, not because of any gross misconduct,” she insisted.
Allegations Against Akpabio
According to Natasha, Akpabio allegedly conditioned her ability to perform legislative duties on personal gratification.
“Each time I walked to him alone, he would say, ‘I am the chief presiding officer of the National Assembly. You have to please me to get these privileges,’” she revealed.
She further described how her attempts to present motions and bills were obstructed, with Akpabio allegedly telling her, “Next time, next time.”
The final breaking point, she said, was when she was forcefully removed from her seat, leading to her public outcry.
Senate’s Response
Despite Akpabio’s denial of the allegations, the Senate maintains that Natasha’s suspension is unrelated to her claims, stating that it was due to “gross misconduct and unruly behavior.” However, they have yet to clearly define the specific misconduct that warranted such a severe penalty.
