Former Atiku Spokesman Expresses Discontent With PDP
Segun Sowunmi, a long-serving member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, has declared that he might support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections—on one condition: he must first formally join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi did not hold back his frustrations with the PDP and its failure to implement needed reforms.
“I Don’t Have Time for Pretense” — Sowunmi
Sowunmi emphasized that he does not believe in covert political alliances or pretending loyalty to one party while supporting a candidate from another. He said:
“If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party. I don’t believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else. I don’t have time for pretense if I’m not there, I’m not there.”

28 Years in PDP Without Reform
Sowunmi revealed that he has been a member of the PDP for 28 years longer than many of its current leaders have spent in the party. He said the refusal of the PDP to address internal issues has left him disillusioned.
“I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party,” he said. “There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave.”

Sowunmi’s comments come as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections. With his growing dissatisfaction with the PDP and openness to joining the APC, Sowunmi’s next political move will be closely watched by both parties and political analysts.
