Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Russia is prepared to engage in discussions with the United States regarding a peace initiative involving Ukraine, with potential talks as early as today.
This development follows Ukraine’s agreement, after consultations with U.S. diplomats in Saudi Arabia, to a 30-day ceasefire proposal, which the U.S. has subsequently presented to Moscow.
The Kremlin confirmed that U.S. negotiators are en route to Russia, following a phone conversation between Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov and U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz on Wednesday.
Despite these developments, Russian officials have expressed skepticism regarding the proposed 30-day ceasefire, suggesting it might serve merely as a temporary respite for Ukrainian forces. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov characterized such measures as imitations of peaceful actions, indicating Russia’s reluctance to commit without significant concessions.
The U.S. has resumed arms deliveries to Ukraine after lifting a suspension of military aid, signaling ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense. This move coincides with the ceasefire proposal, underscoring the complex dynamics at play as diplomatic efforts continue.
These developments occur in the context of recent high-level engagements, including the February 2025 summit in Saudi Arabia, where U.S. and Russian officials discussed potential pathways to end the conflict in Ukraine. Notably, Ukrainian representatives were not invited to this summit, leading to tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine.
