Robert Moreno denies using ChatGPT to coach
Former Spain coach Robert Moreno denies claims that he used ChatGPT or any AI tool to coach Russian club Sochi, including preparing matches or deciding line-ups.
Moreno, who left Sochi in September 2025 after a poor run of results, addressed the allegations in an open letter published by Spanish newspaper Marca on Monday.
Claims of AI use “completely false”
“I have never used ChatGPT or any AI to prepare matches, decide line-ups, or choose players. That is completely false,” Moreno wrote.
He acknowledged using technology for analysis but emphasized that all sporting decisions were made by himself and his staff.
“My career in football began precisely through data and video analysis. It’s what I specialise in and what made the difference in my early days,” Moreno said.
“Like any professional coaching staff, we use analysis tools — GPS, Wyscout, video, scouting platforms. Technology helps process information faster, but the sporting decisions are always made by the coaching staff.”
Dispute with former Sochi executive
Moreno attributed the reports to former club executive Andrei Orlov, with whom he had professional differences.
“My departure was by mutual agreement at a time of inconsistent results and disagreements over sporting planning, as is common in football,” he said.
“To present it as being ‘fired for using ChatGPT’ simplifies something much more complex and is also untrue.”
Coaching background
Moreno has also managed Monaco and Granada and served as Spain’s national team coach. He temporarily replaced Luis Enrique in 2019 and was appointed full-time after Enrique resigned due to his daughter’s illness. He was later replaced when Spain rehired Enrique, who accused Moreno of disloyalty for attempting to remain in charge for Euro 2020.
