Rivers State Tragedy: Six Family Members Die in Locked Room
Authorities in Rivers State are investigating the deaths of six members of a family found in a locked room in Ogale, Eleme, on Sunday. The victims have been identified as Theophilus Obele (49), Eunice Obele (35), Abel Nwaka (25), Saka Obele (18), Peace Obele (14), and Nyimenka Obele (7).
The shocking discovery came after Godwin Ogosu, the brother of one of the victims, reported that his elder brother, the brother’s wife, and their children had not woken up, despite the doors being locked from the inside.
Police Respond and Begin Investigation
Police Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed that officers from the Eleme Division forced open the doors and discovered the lifeless bodies. She said photographic evidence has been taken and the corpses deposited at Last Home Mortuary, Ebubu Eleme, for autopsy.
“The generator was reportedly left on in the parlour of the victims,” Iringe-Koko added, noting that preliminary investigations suggest possible generator fume poisoning as the cause of death.
Police Commissioner Orders Full Probe
Rivers State Police Commissioner, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident. The command also extended condolences to the bereaved families, promising that all aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined.

This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Ogale community in Eleme, raising urgent concerns about the dangers of running generators indoors without proper ventilation.
