Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has called on traditional rulers to collaborate with his administration in restoring lasting peace and stability in the state.
Speaking at a meeting with traditional rulers at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday, Vice Admiral Ibas emphasized the critical role of the traditional institution in fostering unity, de-escalating tensions, and rebuilding trust among Rivers people.
Restoring Order Amid Political Crisis
Acknowledging the impact of ongoing political unrest on governance and security, Vice Admiral Ibas reaffirmed his commitment to restoring pride, honor, and safety across the state. He highlighted Rivers State’s strategic position as the heart of the Niger Delta and a vital economic hub, stressing the need to end instability.
“The traditional institution is a vital partner in governance,” he stated. “You are the bridge between the government and the people, the custodians of our values, and mediators in times of conflict. Your wisdom and leadership are essential to achieving lasting peace.”
He urged traditional rulers to remain neutral, avoiding political affiliations and actions that could fuel division or violence. Additionally, he called on them to report illegal activities to the appropriate authorities and ensure their domains remain free from unrest.
Commitment from Traditional Leaders
In response, the Chairman of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, welcomed the administrator’s approach and assured him of the council’s full cooperation. He described Vice Admiral Ibas as a “peacemaker” and pledged that traditional rulers would continue working toward harmony and progress in Rivers State.
As the administration moves forward, Vice Admiral Ibas reiterated his openness to ideas and strategies that will shape policies aimed at long-term peace and development.
