Rivers High Court Halts Assembly Impeachment of Governor Fubara
A Rivers State High Court in Oyigbo has issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House, and other officials from sending any correspondence to the Chief Judge regarding the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The order, issued by Justice F.A. Fiberesima on Friday, also bars Chief Judge Simeon Amadi from receiving or acting on any documents from the Assembly to constitute a panel investigating alleged misconduct against the state’s top executives for seven days.
Court Orders on Service of Process
The judge granted leave for the governor and deputy governor to serve the interim order and originating court processes to all 31 defendants at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly. The Chief Judge, as the 32nd defendant, is to be served through judiciary staff at the High Court premises.
Justice Fiberesima adjourned the hearing of the motions to January 23, 2026.
Assembly Resolves to Continue Impeachment
Despite the court order, the Rivers State Assembly resolved on Friday to continue impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy. Four lawmakers who had previously withdrawn from the move reversed their decision, accusing the governor of being inflexible.
