Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Gov. Fubara
The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday, January 8, 2026, formally initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, marking a major escalation in the state’s ongoing political crisis.
Presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, lawmakers signed and read out notices of alleged gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Allegations Against the Governor and Deputy
According to the impeachment notices:
The governor allegedly demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly complex and spent state funds without legislative approval.
Other accusations include withholding funds due to the Assembly Service Commission, bypassing established budgetary processes, and refusing compliance with a Supreme Court ruling regarding financial autonomy.
Deputy Governor Odu faces separate allegations, including reckless spending, obstructing the Assembly’s functions, and allowing unauthorised individuals to occupy government offices.
Speaker Amaewhule announced that the impeachment notices will be served on the governor and his deputy within seven days, a constitutional requirement before the next stages of the process can unfold.
This development follows months of escalating tensions between the state legislature and the executive, rooted in disputes over budget presentation, legislative autonomy, and internal party conflicts that have rippled through Rivers politics.
