Rivers Assembly Faces Division Over Governor Fubara’s Impeachment Threat

EFCC Releases El-Rufai, ICPC Takes Him Into Custody Over Fresh Charges

The Rivers State House of Assembly is experiencing a sharp division as two lawmakers called for restraint amid impeachment threats against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu.

In a surprising move, Hon Sylvanus Nwankwo, minority leader representing Omuma constituency, appealed to his colleagues to “temper justice with mercy” and explore alternatives to the governor’s removal. Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, Nwankwo emphasized the need for a humane and peaceful resolution.

“Having listened to pleas from elders and leaders, both within and outside the state, we are calling on our colleagues to reconsider and see how this matter can be resolved amicably,” he said.

Joining the call, Hon Peter Abbey, representing Degema constituency, also urged colleagues to adopt a human approach despite acknowledging alleged constitutional breaches by the governor. Abbey added that the governor should work to de-escalate tensions, potentially paving the way for a peaceful settlement.

“He has infringed on parts of the constitution, but we are human beings. We plead with our colleagues to reconsider,” Abbey stated.

However, their intervention contrasts with the position of Hon Alabo Enemi George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, who insisted that the impeachment process would continue unabated. George confirmed that both Governor Fubara and Deputy Odu had been formally served, signaling no immediate reversal in the ongoing proceedings.

The developments highlight growing tensions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, with the minority urging dialogue and compromise, while others remain committed to formal impeachment. The coming days will be critical in determining whether reconciliation is possible or the political crisis escalates further.
