Proceedings in the House of Representatives descended into chaos on Tuesday as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to rescind the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The motion was moved during plenary by Francis Waive, Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, who urged the chamber to reverse its decision on the bill passed on December 23, 2025.
When the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, put the motion to a voice vote, the “nays” appeared louder than the “ayes.” However, Abbas ruled in favour of the “ayes,” sparking immediate protests from several lawmakers who openly objected to the decision.
The situation escalated as members shouted in dissent. The Speaker subsequently called for an executive session in a bid to restore order, but the proposal was initially rejected by lawmakers.
Despite the resistance, Abbas moved the House into an executive session.
It will be recalled that when the Green Chamber passed the amendment in December, it adopted a provision mandating the real-time transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV), a measure widely seen as aimed at strengthening electoral transparency.
