March 27, 2025– Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has revealed why he is determined to dismantle the Labour Party’s Obidient Movement, citing personal reasons linked to Peter Obi and alleged harassment from Obi’s supporters.
Speaking in an interview with News Central, Omokri claimed he was instrumental in Obi’s selection as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election. However, he said members of the Obidient Movement later turned against him, threatening him and his family.
Omokri: ‘Peter Obi Was My Project’
Omokri explained that his fallout with the movement began when he was targeted with threats, including attempts to harass his wife and daughter. He alleged that Obidient supporters even trailed him and his wife in the UK while they were out jogging.
“I took a vow to destroy that movement because Peter Obi was a project of mine. I was responsible for Peter Obi becoming the running mate to Waziri Atiku Abubakar in 2019. I’ve said this publicly. I’ve got the documents. I’m a meticulous record keeper.”
He added that while he initially ignored online attacks, the threats escalated to physical harassment, prompting him to take a stand.
“Peter Obi’s movement, Obidients, started attacking me, threatening me, insulting me. That was OK. But then they moved from myself to my family. I just had a daughter at that time. There were multiple death threats. They came to my house in the United Kingdom. They trailed my wife and me when we were jogging. They found out my jogging route and pursued me, threatening me.”
Omokri insisted that his decision to oppose the movement is not about politics but personal safety, adding that Peter Obi’s inaction over the threats influenced his decision.
Reactions to Omokri’s Claims
Omokri’s statement has sparked mixed reactions, with some Nigerians questioning his claims, while others believe he is justified in his stance. As the 2027 elections approach, the political rivalry between supporters of different candidates is expected to intensify.
