The political discourse in Nigeria took a sharp turn this week as former presidential aide Reno Omokri launched a public critique of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate now reportedly affiliated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Omokri’s rebuke claims that Obi displayed “unconscious tribalism” in his recent celebration of Nigerian athletes abroad.
The controversy arose after Obi took to X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate Michael Onwenu, Uchenna Nwosu, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba for their appearances in the NFL championship game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. In his post, Obi praised the players’ achievements to highlight Nigeria’s untapped talent, noting that the country’s potential is often stifled by a lack of “systems of excellence” at home.
Omokri quickly responded, arguing that Obi’s recognition appeared selective. He pointed out that all three athletes mentioned share Igbo heritage, while other Nigerian players on the same field—such as Boye Mafe and Olusegun Oluwatimi of the Seattle Seahawks were omitted. “How can a leader claim to represent a multi-ethnic nation while seemingly overlooking contributions based on ethnicity?” Omokri questioned.
Supporters of Obi, however, argue that the former presidential candidate has consistently celebrated Nigerian talent without ethnic bias. They cite his visible support for the Super Eagles during the 2026 World Cup playoff and his praise for the Super Falcons’ 10th WAFCON title in 2025. In both cases, Obi framed the achievements as national successes while criticizing the government for failing to support athletes adequately.
The exchange has reignited debate on social media about the intersection of identity politics and public recognition. As Nigeria approaches the 2027 election cycle, the incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding ethnic representation and national unity among the country’s political leaders.
