A coalition of civil society groups staged a protest at the National Assembly entrance on Wednesday, calling for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step down pending an investigation into allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The demonstrators arrived as early as 8 a.m., just before the Senate resumed plenary. Holding banners with messages such as “Akpabio Must Go” and “Protect Women’s Rights,” they voiced their demands for accountability.
Akpoti-Uduaghan recently accused Akpabio of victimizing her after she allegedly rejected his sexual advances. Her claims, made during a live television interview, came amid controversy surrounding a seating arrangement change in the Senate on February 20.
