In recent months, Otukpo and surrounding areas have witnessed a surge in violent attacks. Notably, in April 2023, suspected armed herdsmen killed 46 individuals in the Umogidi community of Entekpa Adoka district within Otukpo Local Government Area. This tragic event spurred residents of the Apa community to protest, blocking the Oweto-Loko-Abuja Road to express their frustration over the government’s inaction.
Similarly, in October 2023, youths in Ojali-Oglewu community of Ohimini Local Government Area apprehended a suspected kidnapper and rescued 11 abducted individuals. Their attempt to administer jungle justice was thwarted by police intervention, leading to protests and the blockage of the Otukpo-Oweto-Loco-Abuja highway.
Protest Details
The latest protest saw angry youths, community leaders, and other concerned citizens carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Enough is Enough” and “Government Must Act Now”. Protesters blocked major roads, disrupting movement and calling for increased security presence in the area.
