President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, at the State House in Abuja.
President Bio arrived at the Presidential Villa’s Forecourt at 12:22 p.m., where he was greeted by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. The Sierra Leonean leader was honored with a ceremonial welcome by the Presidential Guards Brigade, accompanied by traditional bagpipe music.
Nigeria and Sierra Leone share longstanding diplomatic ties, dating back to their respective independences in October 1960 and April 1961. Both countries are active members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, working together to foster peace, stability, and development across the region.
During Sierra Leone’s civil war (1991–2002), Nigeria played a crucial role in peacekeeping efforts, leading the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) to restore stability.
Economic relations between the two nations have seen fluctuations over the years. In 2023, Nigeria’s exports to Sierra Leone were valued at approximately $5.55 million, comprising fertilizers, edible preparations, electrical and electronic equipment, glassware, and coffee, tea, and spices. On the other hand, Sierra Leone’s exports to Nigeria included animal and vegetable fats and oils, machinery, rubber products, and seafood.
While details of the meeting between both leaders were not immediately available, the visit highlights the continued diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
