Pope Francis has spent his third consecutive night in a Rome hospital without complications, a Vatican spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
The 88-year-old pontiff had a “restful night,” enjoyed breakfast, and read the morning newspapers, the spokesperson added.
Francis, who leads the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, has been hospitalized since Friday due to bronchitis, according to Vatican officials. Concerns over his health had intensified in recent days as his voice weakened during public appearances and he rarely left his Vatican residence.
Reports suggest that doctors had been urging him to seek hospital treatment for some time. The pope has a history of respiratory issues, having lost part of his right lung in his youth.
Doctors have prescribed “absolute rest,” the Vatican stated. While initial reports indicated he would remain hospitalized for five days, there is growing speculation that his stay may be extended.
Due to his condition, Pope Francis has canceled all scheduled engagements over the weekend and at the start of the week.
