Peter Obi to Rejoin PDP for 2027 Presidential Race – Sheriff Reveals
Former Borno State Governor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ali Modu Sheriff, has alleged that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is preparing to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest in the 2027 general elections.
Sheriff made the claim during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, stating that credible information at his disposal indicates Obi’s imminent defection from his current coalition platform.
Obi’s Coalition with ADC May Be Temporary
In recent weeks, Obi joined forces with several opposition leaders under the umbrella of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a new political coalition aimed at unseating the ruling APC in the next elections.
Although he has publicly hinted at his desire to contest the 2027 presidency through this coalition, Sheriff believes the move may be a strategic step ahead of his return to the PDP.
Sheriff: “Obi Will Likely Clinch PDP Presidential Ticket”
“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, it’s president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” Sheriff stated.
“Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP.”
He also mentioned that such a development would narrow the PDP presidential contenders to Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and possibly Rotimi Amaechi, although Amaechi remains in the APC as of now.
Tinubu’s Government Mocks ‘Internally Displaced’ Opposition Politicians
Meanwhile, the Bola Tinubu-led administration has continued to mock opposition leaders who have switched party allegiances multiple times. The Presidency recently referred to the likes of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as “internally displaced politicians,” a jibe aimed at the seeming desperation among some opposition figures ahead of 2027.
