A prominent figure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, joined the Occupy National Assembly protest in Abuja on Monday, opposing the Senate’s decision to reject the mandatory electronic transmission of election results.
The demonstration, which brought together Nigerian youths, civil society activists, and pro-democracy advocates, took place at the entrance of the National Assembly. Protesters demanded that lawmakers reconsider the e-transmission clause of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, emphasizing that electronic transmission is crucial for transparency and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Addressing the crowd, Obi stressed the importance of preventing electoral “glitches” and ensuring credibility in the upcoming elections, urging the National Assembly to allow the electoral process to proceed transparently.
The protest remained largely peaceful, with security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) deployed to maintain order around the complex.
Organizers of the “Occupy National Assembly” demonstration reiterated that their call for mandatory electronic transmission is aimed at enhancing the integrity of Nigeria’s elections and restoring public trust in the democratic process.
