Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has commended the European Union’s continued developmental support in Nigeria’s northern regions, particularly the North East and North West. Obi shared this via a post on X (formerly Twitter) after meeting with the new EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, on Thursday in Abuja.
In the post, Obi highlighted the EU’s focus on critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and its strategic work around the Lake Chad Basin. He emphasized the importance of such developmental efforts in regions that have long faced insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment.
“I was particularly elated by their concentration in the North East and North West, which, for me, deserves special attention,” Obi wrote. “I also commend their commitment to critical areas of development that can help in educating, pulling people out of poverty, and increasing productivity, particularly in agriculture.”
Obi expressed optimism that continued collaboration with international partners like the EU—combined with effective leadership—could help address the root causes of hardship in these regions.
“I urge them not to relent in the good work they are doing to help turn Nigeria around,” he added. “I believe that with all this support—combined with good governance, competent leadership with capacity, and compassion—we can turn Nigeria around. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
EU’s Ongoing Work in the North
The EU has been a consistent development partner in Nigeria, particularly in the conflict-affected North East and North West. Through programs like the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), the EU has supported displaced persons, education initiatives, and agricultural resilience programs in states like Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina.
Just last year, the EU pledged over €200 million in humanitarian and development aid targeted at Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations.
Why the Focus on the North Matters
The North East and North West regions have been plagued by insecurity for over a decade. The Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes have left millions displaced and basic services severely strained. According to UNICEF, over 10 million children remain out of school in Nigeria, with a significant percentage in these regions.
Agriculture, a major livelihood in northern Nigeria, has also suffered, contributing to widespread poverty and food insecurity.
A Shared Vision for Development
Peter Obi has consistently advocated for investment in human capital development particularly education and agriculture as a path to sustainable peace and economic recovery. His endorsement of the EU’s initiatives aligns with his policy priorities and broader vision of inclusive national development.
