PDP Leadership Under Fire Over Wike’s Continued Defiance
Fabiyi Condemns Inaction on Wike
A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Showunmi Fabiyi, has openly criticized the party’s leadership for its failure to take disciplinary action against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over what he described as “blatant anti-party conduct.”
Fabiyi expressed deep concern that the PDP risks losing its identity and strength if it continues to tolerate such indiscipline from its top members. “The leadership of the PDP has failed woefully in enforcing party discipline. Wike has defied the party repeatedly, yet no consequences,” he said.
Wike’s Actions Stir Internal Division
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has faced accusations of undermining the PDP since the 2023 elections. He allegedly supported President Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC and accepted a ministerial role in the APC-led government, fueling outrage among loyal party members.
Despite calls from stakeholders and internal factions like the Bala Mohammed Vanguard for his suspension or expulsion, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has remained largely silent.
Crisis in Rivers Deepens
The feud between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has further exposed the cracks within the PDP. The party’s perceived support for Wike in the ongoing Rivers State political crisis has sparked backlash, including a demand from over 60 PDP lawmakers for the resignation of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum.
Fabiyi warned that failure to act now could spell long-term damage for the PDP. “No party survives without discipline. Wike’s actions are not just rebellious—they are destructive,” he noted.
Wike Defends Loyalty to PDP
In response, Wike has insisted he remains a loyal PDP member and has no intention of defecting to the APC. He maintains that his criticisms are aimed at strengthening, not destroying, the party from within.
However, many party members and observers believe the PDP leadership must take concrete action to assert its authority and restore public confidence.
