Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Segun Sowunmi, has called on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP ahead of the 2027 general election to improve his chances of winning.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Sowunmi argued that Obi needs a bigger political platform and the backing of party structures to make a serious run for the presidency.
“If I were Peter Obi, I would return to the PDP and make a strong case for the presidential ticket,” he said. “He got over six million votes without governors or structure. Imagine what he could do with the backing of 12 governors and a grassroots network.”
He added that if Obi became PDP’s flag bearer, he could potentially sweep the South East, South South, Christian North, and North Central zones.
Obi had left the PDP in June 2022, citing limited space to make “constructive contributions.” He went on to run under the Labour Party and finished third in the 2023 election.
Sowunmi emphasized that his comments were hypothetical and in response to broader questions about political alignments ahead of 2027.
