Patience Jonathan Shuts Down 2027 Presidential Rumours
Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has stated that her husband, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, will not contest in the 2027 presidential election. She made the statement during a public event hosted by the Greater Igbo Forum in Abuja, firmly dismissing speculations that Jonathan might challenge President Bola Tinubu at the polls.
According to her, the former president has reached the peak of his political journey and remains committed to national peace and stability, not another bid for office.
PDP Denies Inviting Jonathan to Contest
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has also distanced itself from claims that it has offered Jonathan a presidential ticket for 2027. Speaking on the matter, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed that while Jonathan is eligible to run, the party has made no such invitation.
He pointed to Patience Jonathan’s earlier remarks as further evidence that the former president is not eyeing a return to Aso Rock.
Northern Leaders Still Pushing for Jonathan
Despite these firm denials, some northern leaders continue to advocate for Jonathan’s return. Notably, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed willingness to step aside for Jonathan if he chooses to run, praising his leadership and experience.
These political movements suggest that external pressure to draw Jonathan back into the race is ongoing, even as his camp maintains a clear “no” stance.
Legal Questions Around Jonathan’s Eligibility
A 2018 constitutional amendment may also affect Jonathan’s ability to run. The law restricts any vice president who completes a president’s term from seeking the office more than once. Since Jonathan completed Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s term and then served a full term of his own, legal experts argue that this could disqualify him from contesting again.
