LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the Senior Pastor of House on the Rock Church, has been granted bail after voluntarily reporting to authorities over a viral video that sparked controversy online.
In a statement posted Tuesday on the Command’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, revealed that Adefarasin turned himself in and was interrogated regarding a video that showed him holding what appeared to be a gun while addressing another road user.
“Pastor Paul Adefarasin, who turned himself in today at the Lagos State Police Command over a viral video where he was seen holding a gun-like object against another road user, was interrogated and he volunteered a cautionary statement to police investigators,” Hundeyin stated.
The police clarified that the item seen in the video was not a firearm but a stun gun, which is a prohibited anti-riot device under Nigerian law.
“What was recovered from him… is not a lethal weapon or firearm but a stun gun,” the statement read.
Pastor Adefarasin reported to the police headquarters in Ikeja driving an unregistered vehicle, which further fueled public concern when the video emerged.
Earlier, in a message shared on his social media platforms, Adefarasin dismissed claims that he brandished a firearm, describing the incident as a misunderstanding.
“You might be aware of a video circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm. I want to assure you — that was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone,” he stated.
The police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and the outcome will be made public once concluded.
“No one is above the law,” Hundeyin emphasized in the statement.
