The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) intercepted contraband goods worth ₦165.3 million in February 2025, according to Area Controller Joseph Adelaja.
Speaking at a press briefing in Ibadan on Friday, Adelaja highlighted the command’s achievements since he assumed duty on February 7. He revealed that officers successfully seized high-profile smuggling consignments, including:
- 1,043 bags of 50kg foreign rice
- 452 used tyres
- Two bales of used clothing
- 233 kegs of 25 litres each of petrol
Impact on Local Industries
Adelaja emphasized that these seizures have helped prevent the illegal influx of goods that could undermine local industries, particularly rice farmers and manufacturers in Oyo and Osun States.
“The interception of foreign parboiled rice has boosted local rice production and consumption in the region,” he stated.
Revenue Collection and Anti-Smuggling Efforts
Reaffirming the command’s dedication to revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations, Adelaja disclosed that the February revenue collection stood at ₦2.048 billion.
He praised the commitment and efficiency of officers in tackling smuggling, safeguarding the economy, and protecting local businesses from the negative impact of illicit trade.
