Ondo State Confirms 12 Mpox Cases Across Eight LGAs, Begins Targeted Vaccination August 11–21

Ondo Confirms Mpox Outbreak and Launches Targeted Vaccination Campaign

The Ondo State Government has confirmed 12 cases of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) across eight local government areas (LGAs) and has announced a targeted vaccination exercise scheduled to run from August 11 to August 21, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (OSPHDA), which revealed that the confirmed cases span multiple LGAs including Akoko South-West, Akoko North-West, Akoko North-East, Owo, Akure South, Akure North, Ondo East, and Odigbo.

Vaccine Type and Dosing

The vaccination drive will utilize a two-dose injectable Mpox vaccine. Although officials did not disclose the exact brand, global health agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the JYNNEOS (MVA-BN) vaccine, a live, non-replicating Modified Vaccinia Ankara vaccine widely used in outbreak control.

Recipients will receive two doses at separate intervals for maximum protection against the virus.

Who Is Eligible for the Vaccination?

The campaign is not for the general public but will focus on high-risk groups:

Adults aged 18 years and above

Individuals already infected with Mpox

Close contacts and relatives of confirmed cases

Healthcare workers directly involved in Mpox case management

According to OSPHDA, the vaccines are free of charge and will be administered at designated health facilities in each affected LGA.

Why This Matters

Mpox is a viral illness that can cause fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, and in some cases, lead to severe health complications. The targeted approach ensures that vaccines reach those most at risk, helping to contain the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.

Public health officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, practice good hygiene, and report any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility.
