Lucky Aiyedatiwa Marks 61st Birthday by Pardoning Seven Convicts in Ondo
Ondo State, January 13, 2026 – In a remarkable gesture of compassion, Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has pardoned seven convicts serving various sentences across the state. The announcement came as part of celebrations for the governor’s 61st birthday and underscores his commitment to restorative justice, prison decongestion, and second chances for inmates who have shown genuine remorse and rehabilitation.
The convicts were selected following thorough recommendations by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, based on verified reports of good behavior, rehabilitation efforts, and readiness to reintegrate into society.
“This act of clemency builds on the governor’s earlier New Year pardon, which freed 77 convicts after careful review and recommendations,” the governor’s office said in a statement.
Second Chances and Rehabilitation at the Core
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s decision highlights his belief in human-centered leadership and the power of restorative justice. The pardons aim to give reformed inmates a new lease on life while helping to reduce congestion in correctional facilities across the state.
Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, praised the governor for his thoughtful approach, calling it a “forward-thinking decision that balances justice, mercy, and societal well-being.”

The governor’s birthday celebration clemency also comes amid praise from state officials for his leadership. Ayodele Akande, Commissioner for Water Resources and Public Sanitation, described Aiyedatiwa as an “industrial and visionary leader,” noting that his administration’s renewed focus on public sanitation and environmental hygiene has improved safety, reduced health risks, and enhanced living conditions across Ondo State.
“Since assuming office, Governor Aiyedatiwa has earned the confidence of citizens and positioned Ondo as a model for effective governance,” Akande said.
