The former 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress, has declared that every vote must count in the 2027 general elections, warning that anyone attempting to undermine the process would face legal consequences.
In a statement shared via his verified X handle on Monday, Obi stressed that unlike previous elections, Nigerians would insist that all valid votes are counted and properly recorded.
He called on citizens to remain at polling units after casting their ballots to witness the counting and transmission of results, saying electoral transparency is critical to safeguarding the country’s democracy.
“Unlike in the past, in 2027 our votes MUST count, and all those who are there not to count the votes will be counted among those destroying Nigeria,” Obi said.
He further urged voters to stay through the collation process, warning that anyone who suppresses or manipulates results would be held accountable under the law.
“Let me reiterate: if you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy, thereby destroying our future, and you must answer to the law,” he added.
Obi’s remarks mark his first major electoral statement since officially joining the ADC, signaling his active engagement in shaping the opposition’s strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
